First Week of School: A. 1942 = the encounter of the “old” to “new world” a. Columbus got credit for the discovery but wasn’t the first European to discover the U.S. b. He got credit b/c the European countries were developed at that time and they weren’t around the 1000s. B. 999 – 1000 = Norsemen discovered the U.S. 1/18/11 A. Religions revolution happened after Columbus discovered the “new world” a. Corruption within the roman catholic church- b. In order to create a “purified religion” ppl demanded that the pope illuminate corruption. c. Priest within the church (recognized) demanded change d. Martin Luther : Baptist minister, taken from a German monk martin Luther i. Took 1 st major step to split the roman catholic church ii. Ultimately broke away and created a new denomination iii. He protested in a series of 97 thesis 1. “this is what I’m complaining about” 2. Cracked western religion into 2 classifications iv. Developed “Lutheranism” v. The heads of state persecuted the roman Catholics vi. Serious of wars existed over 150 years e. John Calvin: Frenchman broke away from the RCC and proposed his own ideology i. Found themselves in a similar situation as Lutheranism ii. Century and a half more = religious warfare iii. Fight to maintain your own faith, possibly die for it, in order to practice faith freely iv. You have to leave if your religion wasn’t the “common faith”

Spain wasn’t the 1 st nation to sponsor exploration activities D. Muslims took control of Iberian peninsula a. 718 – 1492 the reconquest (Christians reconcuoring Spain from Muslims) b. Portuguese pushed Muslims farther and farther south until the 1200s (at that time the Muslims were cleared of Muslim domination by 1300) i. Portuguese Also created the “1 st nation state” ii. 1300s independent Portuguese state engaged in economic activity (trade) c. 3 sons of the king of Portugal proved their worth b/c there were no battles/wars to fight i. They decided they would win the respect of their peers by re-initiating a Portuguese crusade 1. Organized a Portuguese army to attack Islam in its own territory 2. Seized “sailto”? 3. Ethically, and Religiously superior to the Muslims a. They drove them back across northern Africa and middle east 4. Captured the city of asailta and planned to drive across into the heartland of Islam a. Plans didn’t succeed b. The Islam armies killed them quickly, and defended their territory very well 5. Next Step: 2 oldest wanted to stay home and quit fighting 6. Oldest knew he got the crown next
