Once expanded to European became known as great war for empire ii. b/c they battled for total dominance iii. 1760 the cousins of the French monarch joined the conflict and for the next several years most conflict = French Spain vs. England. iv. English won a large point of victory in almost every battle v. 1763 = meet for peace b. English and native allies fought against French on their side. c. Causes of Conflict: i. Territorial disputes ii. Washington and The Virginia iii. 3. Treaty of Paris, 1763 a. French lose number one American possessions b. English get Canada and French territory land east of the Mississippi river i. Get” imperial five” ii. Mississippi = dividing line

iii. French territory west of Miss. = Spanish gets this land c. Spain cedes Florida to England, but receives French territory west of the Mississippi river i. Part done with compensation with what English had done. ii. Spain had controlled Florida since mid 1500s iii. English decided that the Florida peninsula would benefit them and took it from the Spanish. iv. At the end of the war England took EVERYTHING east of the miss. Up into Canada as well v. Although seen as great victory the English stepped back to reorganize and demobilize. vi. b/c the war was costly they needed a long period to get back on feet. d. France awaits an opportunity for revenge i. France didn’t reorganize or withdraw (withdraw from imperialism) b/c of this the French became motivated to improve military so they could take revenge of great loss of territory. e. England has great debt- 147,000,000 and new imperial responsibilities. 4. Changes in British Imperial policies a. Tighter political administration b. Increased military defense i. The colonist accepted as their own line of defense with colonial militias but b/c English had much larger empire to defend from Spain and French in North America ii. c. Enforcement of mercantilist regulation i. Enforced regulations: what they got imported, who they could export to, tariffs on goods.

d. Colonies must pay their fair share- but NOT the imperial debt i. Didn’t have to pay the British debt but British made them pay for more ii. Didn’t tax colonists but raised revenue in the colonies 1. Don’t pass new taxes or new great regulations but a series of laws ( navigation acts / mercantilist policies) asked the colonist to obey them now and that the British were going to enforce them now! iii.
