Background to Colonization A. 1492- Encounter of two worlds a. Europe and Asia = “Old World” b. Why 1492? c. Importance? Why did Christopher Columbus sail west? i. B/c he thought he was sailing towards China, Japan, and India ii. When Columbus reported back his discovery was incredibly important but 500 years before this the Vikings/Norsemen discovered the New World. 1. Norsemen : Norway, Sweden, Denmark, landed in Greenland, Iceland, North East Canada 500 years before Columbus landed in the New World around 1000 AD. a. Leif Erikkson/Erik “The Red” Nothing happened during their discovery of the New World because of Feudalism 700s – 1500s. b. Erikkson led the Norsemen to settle in Greenland/Iceland but no importance resulted from this settlement because Europe wasn’t ready to respond to the discovery this large. iii. In 1492 Europeans knew to travel east to get to Japan and China 1. Las Indias/Las Indies = why he named the native people in the New World Indians iv. Columbus wanted to sail to the Indies which would have been east but accidentally sailed west possibly because of a storm etc. d. Futile system: Social economic/religious/political system i. Time period = 700 – 1500 AD 1. Impeded the inhibited Europe interest B. Characteristics of Feudalism: a. No “ Nation States ”: form of government of geographical area, have political system with a leader, official language, and laws/ways of life. i. There were no nation states back then- No King, or unity among the people, only small provinces that fought each other.
