DRY PIPE SYSTEM A system of piping and automatic sprinklers containing air or nitrogen under pressure (psi) and when released permits the water pressure to open a dry pipe valve. When the dry pipe valve is opened, the water flows through the piping and out the opened sprinklers. Dry pipe systems require a larger demand area to be calculated because of the delay in discharging water onto the fire after the sprinkler activates.
