Day 7 Notes Cultural Hierarchies What Makes Popular Culture, Popular? Popular Culture : the aesthetic products created and sold by profit-seeking firms operating in the global entertainment market. [beauty] -favorable to a wide audience -universal [global market] - ever-changing [what’s in today might be old tomorrow] -largely an urban phenomenon [higher population within cities and urban areas which makes access to pop culture more easily] -mass-produced [TV shows, make clothes, make culture in bulk] -commercialized [culture created for profit] -assumed to be unsophisticated, ordinary, or of low taste [once mainstream assumed not to be cool] -belongs to the masses [ownership that pop culture belongs to the people, pop culture is up to the people] High and Low Culture Before the Industrial Revolution, people mostly listened to folk music 19 th Century -Emergence of American upper class groups -Capitalist elite used different forms of culture to set themselves apart from the rest of society -Highbrow vs. Lowbrow culture [suedo science, believed that certain physical characteristics belong to certain groups, higher forehead = intellectual, etc.] -Conspicuous consumption [association between one’s identity and one’s behavior, purchasing stuff to signify status, waste stuff = higher status because shows you don’t need it] 20 th Century -Emphasis on American Dream -Prohibition Age-associations made between illegal consumptions of drugs/alcohol
