Day 8 Notes Will the Real Country and Punk Artists Please Stand Up?! Musical Authenticity : The notion of a musician and/or music being original (not copied, untainted) and/or pure - Performance [live performances, music videos; not going to waste their voice, going to perform the story of the song instead of the audio] - Composition [the construction of the song; a connection of lyrics with self; substance in lyrics/song, complexity/simplicity of the song] - An on-going process [constantly has to re-evaluate an artist’s authenticity; never done, always need to be reminded] - Can be packaged/sold [rise of capitalism authenticity can be sold; producers and creators can create authenticity] - Real or imagined? [often subjective; makes things complicated; is the artist doing what they want to do or doing what the record label wants; is it real?] - Contextual [One setting, performance can be real in others it may not; depends on the audience] - Associated with degree of musician’s financial success [people who saw some people as mainstream and others not; if musician doesn’t make money can be seen
