Jewish initially not seen as white for religious and economic reasons -Jesus only Southeastern European group coming from urban, commercial, and manufacturing backgrounds -Jesus 1 st white ethnic group to enter college in significant #’s -Antisemitism “normal” in elite college culture -Post-WWII: Jewish opportunities expanded 1944 G.I Bill -Most Massive affirmative action program -Money during job search, loans to open up businesses, low interest loans, and educational benefits -Helped mostly white males GI’s Basic Concepts -Institutional Discrimination: The denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups that results from the normal operations of Society -Segregation: The legal or social practice of separating people on the basis of their race or ethnicity -1896: Plessy Vs. Ferguson- US Supreme Court decision that established “Separate but equal” doctrine -1870-1950: Jim Crow Segregation
