Educational Standards I live in the state of Ohio, and from what I have learned today and have known previously, Ohio seems to have high standards regarding education. I cannot even attend an online college to receive my bachelor’s degree in elementary education; due to Ohio’s high standards. I plan on teaching elementary students, hopefully first or second grade and each of those grades the students are taught language arts. Ohio’s academic content standards in English language arts require many things. Regarding phonemic awareness, word recognition, and fluency standards, Ohio requires that “Students in the primary grades learn to recognize and decode printed words, developing the skills that are the foundations for independent reading. They discover the alphabetic principle (sound-symbol match) and learn to use it in figuring out new words. They build a stock of sight words that helps them to read quickly and accurately with comprehension” (Ohio Resource Center, 2011) The states standard requiring each student to “build a stock of sight words” (Ohio
