Ithaca Community Hospital 100 East Shore Drive Ithaca, NY 14850 Mr. Yoku Wakaranai Vice President of Consulting Engineering Olin Engineering One Xanadu Park Ithaca, NY 14850 September 4, 2009 Subject: Evaluation of your new artificial kidney system Dear Mr. Wakaranai, As we discussed by phone, our facility primarily serves patients in kidney failure that require the removal of water and waste metabolites from blood. Our hospital is evaluating if our current kidney dialysis systems should be replaced with your new hollow fiber hemodialyzer so that we could service our most severe patients more efficiently and quickly. Our understanding of your device is that blood flows from an artery through the insides of a bundle of hollow cellulose acetate fibers, and a dialyzing fluid (which consists of water and various dissolved salts) flows on the outside of the fibers. The waste metabolites we need to remove (urea, creatinine, uric acid and phosphate ions) can pass through the fiber walls into the dialyzing fluid while purified blood is returned to a vein. Can you please send us a blockflow
