Eric Foner’s critique on the accuracy of Amistad was very eye opening. After watching the film in class I thought it was very well put together, and I thought the directors did a great job at drawing the audience in. I didn’t pay very much attention to the accuracy of the historical facts in the movie, but now that I look back on it, a lot of the things they put into the movie didn’t add up. One thing that sticks out to me now is the court decision of Amistad sparking the Civil War. I learned in history classes

Unformatted text preview: that there were many reasons that the Civil War started, and a case like this would not have been one of them. Another thing about this movie that Eric Foner brought to my attention was that the white characters were presented as the main characters. Their decisions and inquiry were what directed the movie line and flow. It amazes me how I can be so blinded by dramatic effects and gore, but then again that’s their job in Hollywood; they do a brilliant job....
