Yip 1 Stacey Yip Professor Michael Monteon DOC 1: Diversity, Section B02 11 October 2009 Journal Two: A New Race? by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. In the article, A New Race? , by Arthur Schlesinger Jr, he argues that the ideas of assimilation and civic participation are essential in unifying America into one undivided people. He first paints the picture of the ideal America: a nation made up of many nations, so much so that the society has no common roots and that everyone is similar. He claims that to achieve this ideal nation, Americans must exercise the idea of civic participation – that all Americans must do their part in society by taking an active role in how America was made. Through many quotes from famous historians, he claims that all Americans, regardless of their background, hold in common “the ideals of inalienable rights to freedom, justice, and opportunity” (7), which is what the American nation is known for. This way of thinking, called “the American Creed” (6), is enough to assimilate immigrants into one unifying body.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
