Yip 1 Stacey Yip Professor Michael Monteon DOC 1: Section B02 17 November 2009 Journal 6: La Femenista In “La Femenista” by Anna Nieto Gomez, she argues that Chicanas have been oppressed by what she refers to as sexist racism. She discusses the Chicano Movement and their fight for equal rights, and then discusses the feminist movement and the issue of a male-dominant society. Gomez links the two ideas together to form sexual racism, where Chicanas are oppressed in their own culture for being feminist (referred to as femenistas) and oppressed in Anglo culture for being Chicano. She argues that Femenistas are pressured into surpressing their desire for women’s rights because Chicanos see a greater need in gaining equality as a whole. These types of Chicanos, referred to as “loyalists,” believe that overcoming racism is a greater issue than sexist oppression. These loyalists look down upon femenistas because the women’s liberation movement is seen as purely Anglo, associating femenistas’ search for identity as traitorous in the Chicano Movement. Gomez also argues that femenistas cannot fit into the feminist movement because of their race. She explains that the problem in the feminist movement is that femenistas’ rights are overlooked and generalized into the same as those of Anglo women.
