1. Consider any one period in U.S. history before 1940 and compare and contrast white attitudes toward Indians and Blacks. Period : Colonial Period Introduction : Dynastic power – Every human being has a soul but doesn’t mean everyone equal (probably doesn’t mean everyone equal in eyes of God) Reason One : Attitude towards Indians -Questioned by pope whether actually human -Seen as savages -Sexual violence towards women (Smith) Reason Two : Attitude towards Blacks -Biologically inferior -Solely property, not really human -Seen as unfit for American society -Once free from slavery ship back to Africa (Takaki Ch 2 – Jefferson) So What ? Question whether white attitudes of power/dominance/superiority still exist today 2. Consider any two immigrant groups in the U.S. during any period before 1940 and trace what they could and did do to improve their situation in the country. Period: 1860-1900 Reconstruction Period Introduction : Racial formation (Omi and Winant), migration flux, melting pot (Schlesinger) Reason One : Irish
