Yip 1 Stacey Yip A08671483 COCU 100: Section A07 Ayhan Aytes Assignment Three, Prompt Two 17 May 2011 Changing Perspectives on a Natural Disaster On March 11, 2011, a colossal earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0 hit Sendai, Japan, triggering massive tsunami waves to rush into the city and destroy everything in its path. Bodies, houses, and office buildings were washed away with each giant wave. Following the tsunami was yet another disaster, the threat of several nuclear power plants exploding. Toxic fumes and radiation seeped into the country, creating more despair to the broken people. Amidst this chaos, media images were able to capture each event as it unfolded. From raw video footage to snapshots and pictures of the destruction, the media was able to bring Japan’s situation to life across the world and to America. Presently, thousands upon thousands of media images make up a large and broad archive of the events in Japan. Personally, however, I have my own smaller archive that is made up of images that stuck with me when I found out about the disaster in Japan. In Marita Sturken’s essay on 9/11, she describes the dust found at Ground Zero as a transformative element that changed over time, from a negative connotation of destroyed rubble to a positive and sacred connotation of remembering the victims. In the same way, the images that I selected for my personal archive are images that helped transform my perspective of the events in Japan from negative to positive. Yip 2 disasters as a whole, teaching me to see things optimistically and reminding me that a higher power is in control. The first two images of my personal archive (located in the appendix) shocked me and made me question why suffering had to happen in the world.
