Yip 1 Stacey Yip COGN 21: Section A01 Ayhan Aytes 1 March 2011 San Diego Museum of Art: An Afternoon Stroll At the San Diego Museum of Art, I chose to look at the North American exhibit and focused on William Merritt Chase’s painting, “An Afternoon Stroll.” The North American exhibit reflects themes of colonialism, national identity, and independence, focusing on images of the American landscape. William Merritt Chase focused on expressing the mood of his subjects within these landscapes. In his painting, “An Afternoon Stroll,” the canvas features an elegant young woman looking out to the right of the canvas, across a grassy field and what appears to be a small lake or pond. The foreground features the woman and the lake, the midground shows the grassy knoll, and the background catches a glimpse of the ocean. Chase uses the element of composition to create meaning in his painting and allow his audience to imagine the story behind the painting. He carefully places the woman at the far left to allow noseroom towards the right, which is where her face is directed. This allows the
