Shaw English 1102 September 9,2010 Essay One Pre-Write: Defined Idea Question: How does Flannery O'Connor employ irony in her short story Good Country People to highlight ideas about personal belief ? People need to have something to believe in, and it doesn't have to be religion or God. The fact that Joy Hulga has a Ph.D in philosophy is ironic because such an occupation would indicate that she has possesses complete knowledge of life and its inner workings. Her extensive study of the subject has led to a nihilistic view of the world and imbedded pessimism in her everyday life. A self proclaimed atheist, she treats Manley Pointer as if he is naive and proclaims that some [people] have taken off their blindfolds and see that there's nothing to see. It's a kind of salvation (257). However, the contrast between her presumed knowledge and her actual knowledge emphasizes her personal beliefs about religion. It is obvious that she does not have much life experience due to her personal beliefs about religion....
