Shaw English 1102 September 2, 2010 Journal Entry for Essay One Question: What role does irony play in Flannery O'Connor's Good Country People, and how does that lead to a deeper understanding of its themes? Notes: It seems like the underlying theme in the story is closely linked to religion and the idea that people want to believe in something higher than themselves; they want to know that life has meaning. In Good Country People, the protagonist, Joy Hulga is the main example of this. While she is a self proclaimed atheist, she seeks to go against her nihilistic views on the world when Manly Pointer arrives because she sees herself (or what she could have) reflected in him. O'Connor uses irony, and the obviousness of it throughout the story serves to highlight this theme. Quotations: “Her name was really Joy but as soon as she was twenty-one and away from home, she had had it legally changed. ..Her legal name was Hulga” (248) Throughout the story, Joy Hulga shifts
