Alternatives to Mainstream Culture o Subculture A group of people who share distinguishing beliefs, values, norms, and  or behaviors that distinguish them from the dominant culture Nudist colonies, punks/Goths/hipsters Believe in many same qualities of society but have distinguishing  quality that differs from the rest o Counterculture A group of people whose beliefs, values, norms, and behaviors are in  direct opposition to those of the dominant culture Vegetarians/vegans (change ideas of food, consumption, and  conservation), hippies (peace, love, challenging America’s role in  expanding and war, civil rights, etc.), using hybrids/smart cars Four Arguments’ for the Sociology of Culture o Should culture be a topic of discussion in sociological research? o Is culture too complex to be studied at all? o Debates about the role and essence of culture: Meaning: arguing about nature of culture. Is it stable? Some say yes,  some no. Unstable in industrial society. Culture can change over time
