Buying and Selling Culture Brief History of Consumption o “The job of the line manager at a factory is to ensure the efficient  production of goods… o the job of the advertiser is to ensure the efficient consumption of goods.” Stuart Ewen Goods need to be consumed, otherwise it has no reason to be  produced o Rise of Consumption Patterns Capitalism is economic and social Time is money and time shouldn’t be wasted. Want to extend  beyond just work time to leisure time. Idea of consumption. You are  producing at work and consuming at home Leisure time should be productive Keep workers busy Emphasis on consumer behavior Workers behaving at work and what they are buying Conspicuous consumption as the ideal Everyone should have the motivation to buy stuff that reflects  someone’s identity. Association of what you have with what you are.
