Definitions Macro: examination of large scale societal patterns and social structures o Ex. Transition from ag based to industrial based society Micro: small scale social patterns, everyday interactions in small groups o Ex. How students interact with each other in a freshman dorm Research methods: strategies employed in order to systematically gather  facts in an attempt to determine relationships between those facts o Ex. Juvenile delinquency and relationship to home/family life Quantitative: sociological research that is conducted primarily with numerical  data o Ex. surveys Qualitative: uses interpretive description rather than numerical data o Ex. Interviews, focus groups o Can have both Qs in one study Theory: systematic explanation for the observations that relate to a particular  aspect of life o Ex. Big bang theory, explains how the world began
