Basic Concepts Prejudice: negative attitude  toward members of selected racial, ethnic, or  other groups o Represents an attitude (not necessarily an action) Stereotypes: over-generalizations about the characteristics of members of  groups Racism: the belief that members of separate races possess different and  unequal human traits o Scientific, cultural (inherent superiority/inferiority depending on what group  you belong to) Discrimination: actions  by dominant-group members aimed at members of a  subordinate group that serve to inflict harm o The actions Racial and ethnic categories are not problematic in themselves, it’s the  meanings we attach to those categories that then cause problems.
