The Sound of the Plain White Folk? How did the content of country music’s social origins emerge? Southern Folklore studies o Emphasize distinction, interested in upper class whites Ethnomusicologists and folklorists o History of music interested in primitive types of music, meaning backwards  from traditional, whites in Appalachians and describe them as simple  minded people who work hard and don’t ask for much, yet responsible for  creating country music. Racial identity compels them and gives them their  creativity. Racial inferiority/superiority, have genetic ability to understand  complicated music form Historian o Bill C. Malone –  Country Music, USA Bible of country music, says exclusive to whites but it’s not. Outside  influences are minimized to increase creativity of whites. The emphasis on a strict racial separation between whites and blacks in U.S.
