STAFFORD, AMANDA World Cinema Biography: Mira Nair Mira Nair is respected around the world as one of the most accomplished directors, writers, & producers of her time. She was born in India, where she studied at Delhi University, eventually receiving education at Harvard University, as well, where she made several documentaries. She made her first feature film in 1988 called Salaam Bombay!, starring Denzel Washington, & the success of the film, which received 25 international nominations, put her on the film world map. Feature films that followed over the next ten years include Mississippi Masala, The Perez Family, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love My Own Country. Several of the feature films she made in the new millennium have earned her much acclaim. In 2001, Nair directed Monsoon Wedding , which took a total of 30 days to shoot & painted a gorgeous cultural depiction of India that earned her the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival. The film was so well received, in fact, that it is one of the highest grossing foreign films of all time. Considered one of her
