An April 2010 New York Times article claims it does – at least in the high tech labor market. Why do women account for only 8 percent of venture-backed tech start-ups even though they account for 40 percent of the ownership of private businesses overall? 2. Does it matter –economically, socially, or politically – that the high tech labor market is dominated by males? In discussions of gender discrimination, an often-invoked claim is that women earn about 75 cents on the dollar that men do . (In the most recent data available – 2009 – that figure is 78.2 cents). But what does it mean? In class we will discuss the following: 1. How is this figure calculated?
