1. E xplain the role of catabolic and anabolic pathways in the enrgy exchanges of cellular metabolism Catabolic pathways release energy by breaking down complex molecules into smaller and simpler compounds. Anabolic pathways, on the other hand, consume energy in order to build complicated molecules from the smaller and simpler ones. These metabolic pathways intersect so that the energy released from the ‘downhill’ reactions of catabolism are used to facilitate the ‘uphill’ reactions of anabolism. This transfer of energy is called energy coupling, due to the correlative downhill and uphill pathways. 2. Explain the first law of thermodynamics The first law of thermodynamics concisely states that the energy of the universe is constant. Energy on the earth can neither be created nor destroyed; it can only be changed and relocated. 3. Describe your own example of energy transfers. Include at least 3 different transfers, and explain the types of energy in each situation. Energy transfer occurs with the simple occurrence of fire burning in a fireplace.
