The Trials A Small Town Faced During WWII  2 “The Trials A Small Town Faced During WWII” Death, anger, fear, pride, hope, grief, these are just a few words that came to mind when I thought of the word “War”. To a country, these words may bring little effect, but to a small town like Whistle Stop, it can bring a life-changing experience. It was September 1939 when World War II was declared. During that time, the small town in Alabama faced a dilemma called the Great Depression. They struggled just to keep their families alive. They did not know, however, that the war was just around the corner. The war allowed Whistle Stop to experience the draft, a town with only a few men, and the return of their heroes. Following Germany’s invasion of Poland was World War II (Wheeler, 2000). The war had begun and so did the draft. The drafting board were scattered throughout the US. “Grady Kilgore says for all you boys to come on in and sign up and get it over with” (Flagg, 1987, p. 236). The draft in Whistle Stop encouraged the boys to sign up. It was a privilege and duty for the boys to fight in the war. Robert Gallagher stated this experience about the draft: “On June 22nd, I said good-bye to my mother, sister Joan, and younger brother Bill at home. My father drove me to the local draft board at 79th Street and Exchange Avenue at 0600 hours. He kissed me on the cheek as he said good-bye. .. I realized these good-byes meant the end of
