Pluralism o Interest groups are good o Why? Link between the public and government officials Serve an educational function Allow peoples views to be heard/seen without the people having to participate Government on automatic pilot All views are represented and everyone takes turns loosing and winning Elitist Theory o Interest groups are bad for democracy Class bias Big, rich groups (fat cats)- Garfield o Win far more often and have more influence o More access to government officials than regular citizens o Oppose change win most often o Status-Quo Bias Interest group Membership o Elitist Interest groups sidetrack the government and cause the money to spend money on stuff it shouldn’t Good from bad o Groups you agree with are good and groups you disagree with are bad Classifying groups o 3 main types of interest groups Private groups Lobby for selective benefit o Selective benefit is a benefit which goes primarily to that particular group lobbying for it
