Music 26ac summer session D 7.7.11 Listening Response #1: Musical Concepts and Contemporary Native American Musics Please fill out this prompt, save your file as “26response1 – [last name, first name],” and upload it to the Bspace assignment page. I) Pitch and Time Concepts 1) According to chapter 3, what is the difference between a “downbeat” and a “backbeat”? Downbeat is the first beat of a rhythm unit or measure. The stress is expected. Backbeat is accenting a beat where stress is not expected. For example, the syncopation that stresses on the weak counts 2 and 4 rather than the strong ones 1 and 3 is called backbeat. 2) What is an ostinato? Is it rhythmic, melodic, or both? Ostinato is a constantly occuring motive. The repeating can be in a rhythmic, melodic pattern or both. 3) What two ways did Professor Wade mention to change the pace of a musical piece? One way is to manipulate the pace of the basic beat, by accelerating or decelerating, to change the strcturing of time, as in “Marieke”. The other way is to subdivide the basic beat. It changes the rhythmic density, as in “Unai Nimbinen”. 4) What difference did we make in class between a “pitch” and a “note”?
