Chenhao(Michael) Mai February 13, 2011 Chinese Cinema Professor Song Paper 1 Two Different Worlds, Two Different Thoughts Have you ever been to other countries without knowing the language or their culture but with a sense of adventure? Ann Hu’s Shadow Magic (2000) presents the story of two men doing just this and trying to change the world. Raymond Wallace travels to China to become rich and famous, only to wind up miserable until aided by an inquisitive local named Liu. The story is set back in 1902 and details the relationship between the Chinese people and Americans. In the movie this relationship is portrayed as somewhat friendly and at the very least one that became quickly close. I, on the other hand believe that the couple are portrayed to be too friendly and the atmosphere is not as foreign as it should be. At this point in History, China had just gone through the anti-foreign uprising of peasants known as the Boxer Rebellion. Also around this time China gave Britain new territories for the
