Communication for Marginalized Populations 2 There are many different uncomfortable situations that you may be put in while working in the medical field. For instance I had a friend who had to give an ECG to man who did not speak any English. It was very difficult to get him to comply because she had no way of verbally communicating with him so she showed him the leads and where they went on her body, so he would understand why she was trying to take off his shirt and trying to shave parts of his chest. It took forever but finally she got him comfortable enough to allow her to proceed, and she was able to get a good reading without any artifacts. This story taught me that sharpening my nonverbal communication skills is crucial to the patient as well as my career. Everyone needs medical treatment at some point in their life and most people are a little phobic and uninformed of hospitals and medical procedures. If the patient
