Conflict Management and Resolution in the Workplace General Purpose: To inform Specific purpose : To inform my audience about conflict in the workplace. Thesis Statement : Conflict is a common occurrence in the workplace, but there are steps one can take to manage conflict. Introduction I. Attention Getter : Aristotle once said ‘Anyone can become angry-that is easy. But to be angry with the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose, and in the right way is not easy’. II. Relating to the Audience : We have all at one time or another encountered a conflict with another person and resolving that conflict can be a challenge. And we are all sure to experience conflict in the workplace at some time or another. III. Thesis statement : Conflict is a common occurrence in the workplace, but there are steps one can take to manage conflict. IV. Credibility Statement : I have done extensive research on the topic of conflict management and talked with several individuals that have dealt with conflict in the office. As many managers and others in charge of personnel will tell you this is a common problem in today’s workplace. V. Preview : Today I am going to discuss with you types of conflicts, ways people manage conflict, and the most effective way to deal with conflict. VI. Background Information : Dudley Cahn, who wrote a research review, defines conflict as “an interaction between persons expressing opposing interests, views or opinions.” Another way to define conflict is when one person hinders another person from reaching his or her goals. Simply put you can see friction occurs when two people do not agree on an issue. Body
