(a) Recombination between 2 transposons in the same chromosome in direct orientation results in the loss of one copy of the transposon and all of the DNA between the 2 transposons. In other words, either transposon 1 or transposon 2 in Fig. (a) and genes numbered 1 to 10 will be lost. A circular DNA intermediate is created which lacks a centromere. As a result, it will not be partitioned properly in mitosis and will ultimately be lost. See Fig. 8.14 (A) on p. 271 of the Hartl-Jones textbook for details.
