The mole: Atoms are very tiny and light…more convenient to consider a collection of them: 1 mole = 6.022 x 10 23 units of something = Avogadro’s number (N A ) This is the number of atoms in exactly 12.000 g of 12 C. Mass (g) Moles (mol) Number of Atoms Formulas, Chemical Equations and more... Atomic weight gives: C 12.011 Which of the following contains the largest number of molecules? A. 1.00 g of NH 3 B. 1.00 g of HF C. 1.00 g of H 2 O D. 1.00 g of CH 4 MW = 17.04 g/mol MW = 20.01 g/mol MW = 18.02 g/mol MW = 16.04 g/mol Molecular weight (MW) of a compound = sum of atomic weights of its constituent elements E.g. C 7 H 16 NO 2 +

Empirical: the chemical formula expressed using the smallest possible whole numbers. E.g. HO for H 2 O 2 gives ratios of atoms, not actual numbers of atoms. Chemical Formulas Molecular: the actual chemical formula E.g. H 2 O 2 indicates the actual number of each element. Empirical formulas can be determined using elemental analysis .

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.

Jill Tulane University ‘16, Course Hero Intern
