Unformatted text preview: Nomenclature of lonio Compounds with Oxo Anions Ionic compounds are named by stating the cation name and then the anion name. The number ofcations and anions is not specified in the name of an ionic compound. The number of each is understood because the overall charge on the compound formula must equal zero. The compounds in this unit are main group cations combined with "OX0" anions. 'Oxo' anions are composed of an element with one or more oxygens atlac hed to it. Many of the anions that you have already seen are "Oxo" anions. For example Nitrate = N03" Sulfate = 304 2- “reat an oxo anion as a group. Never break it up into elements. “he names of Otto anions always have the suffix 'ate' or 'ite'. The compounds in this unit have Oxo anions with'ate' endings. Oxo anions in this unit Nitrate No3 - Acetate CHBCO‘O _ Chlorate CI 03 _ Carbon ate COB 2' Sulfate so 4 2- Chromate CrO4 2' Phosphate Po4 3 ...
