Sanctuary Space Sanctuary o It comes from the Latin word “sanctus” which means “holy.” o It also came to mean a “protected place.” Hieron o It means “holy place.” Temenos o The boundary that separates the sanctuary space from the outside. Boundary Stones o They mark the sacred space and its boundaries as well as other information such as the owner. Altars o They are built upwards to the gods. o Sometimes they are low as they may have been used for heroes. o They also have depictions and inscriptions on them. Temples (ca. 700-600 B.C.) o Return of Monumental Stone Architecture Isthmia Temple of Poseidon (ca. 675-650 B.C.) o It contained cult statues to Poseidon. o Architectural Orders Doric Associated with the Dorians from mainland Greece Colonnades are flat with no base. Ionic Associated with Athens and the coast of Asia Minor. Colonnades are thinner with a base and decorative tops.
