Herodutus. 2 contributions -Gods of various cultures are essentially the same-the theory of equivalence of god. -The reason why we have the same God- some sort of similarity between religion. We have diffusion (different cultures come in contact with each other, so they borrow.) Why is there a universality of religion? - Because of diffusion - Religion didn’t exist. As we borrow from other we adapt. We are gradually moving in the direction of rejecting the founders(islam)-Due to contact between Southern Semites (Arabs), and northern Semites (Jews). -We don’t have much evidence. 3 rd contribution. Some sort of evolutionary stages in developing of religion. -3 stages of historical development. -Age of God Age of heroes -Age of Man He doesn’t elaborate. He does point us in right direction, but doesn’t have evidence. What caused the humans to move from one stage to another. (Not explained) -Assumptions---That some force outside the culture, caused the change of stages. Also says that Gods have human origin. “Human origin of Gods”
