E NGLISH 410 E LEMENTS OF W RITING M ULTILINGUAL S PRING 2011 Instructor: Lisa Heyer Office Hours: 2:10-3:00 TTh or by appointment Office: HUM 112 Phone: 338-1320 Email: lheyer@sfsu.edu COURSE DESCRIPTION: English 410 is an advanced composition course for multilingual students whose native language is not English. It fulfills the upper division literacy requirement, but not G.E. or major field graduation requirements. During this semester, you will read, analyze and discuss essays, articles, and literature related to California. You will write essays, proposals, outlines, and brief reports in the style and form that is required in university courses. Your active participation, willingness to communicate, and ability to work with classmates in small groups will help you succeed in this class. Group projects include an oral presentation using PowerPoint. You will be writing some assignments outside of class as well as others in class under a time restraint. REQUIRED TEXTS: (available used and new at the bookstore) English 410.01 Course Reader (available at SFSU bookstore) Note: Please put the reader in a three-hole binder and bring to every class. Failure to have these materials will result in an absence for that day. CONDITIONS FOR ADMISSION: You must meet all of the following requirements. You must be a junior, senior, or graduate student. You must have passed English 310 OR be advised by a JEPET or ESLPT advisor. You must be multilingual with English as your second or other language. GRADUATION WRITING ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENT (GWAR): All departments require you to take a “writing-intensive” course to satisfy the GWAR requirement. Previously, this requirement was satisfied by 1) passing the JEPET, 2) taking English 414, 410, or 411. Please check to see if your major requires the GWAR course, as some majors may not have a
