English 410/Vicar DISCUSSION: Excerpts from James Quay’s “Interviews” 1) Claire Peeps, who moved to California in 1977, describes an experience that “really was such an extraordinary thing that you felt ‘only in California’ would this happen…to be in a room with six thousand people, with huge numbers of them from Mexico…the Philippines…Iran” (p. 199 ). DISCUSS: What experience is she talking about? Why does she say “only in California”? 2) Born in California in 1931, Cruz Reynoso describes the changes he has seen over the years in the farmworkers’ situation here. He writes: “So we might say ‘look at all that progress,’ and yet when I see the life of the farmworker now, I can’t tell you that it’s any better; in fact, I think it’s worse than it was when I was a kid over fifty years ago” (p. 202). DISCUSS: What kind of progress do you think Reynoso is referring to? In what ways might the farmworkers’ situation be worse now than fifty years ago? 3)
