Chapter 2 1. What do the left and right wings of American politics contend about news bias? Left-wing observers say the mass media support corporate power, the military-industrial complex, and the interests of the wealthiest slice of Americans. Right-wing critics insist that the media make our culture unduly liberal, spreading feminism, environmentalism, and acceptance of homosexuality across the land. 2. What is Schudson’s point about insiders and their view of news power? Political insiders are especially impressed with media power; they are caught up in image, polls, and believe in the power of television, the subjectivity of reality, and the reality of perceptions. 3. People do what re: media power? People tend to overestimate the power of the media. 4. What is Schudson’s view of the reporters’ role in Watergate? Key political players (government officials, members of the FBI) leaked information to Woodward and Bernstein, and the reporters’ work would have been impossible without them. 5.
