ODS CODE 25 HISTORY 261 9/12/11 New Kingdom Egyptian Pharaohs Amenhotep IV and Nefertiti (1353-1335) He brought a whole new belief system- He rejected all things of past dynasties and the Egyptian past belief system “Akhen”- earliest recorded monotheism Simplified crown; art-naturalistic Tried to replace everything of Egyptian beliefs over night Embraced nothing old Replaced with Akhen- people worship by absolute obedience to Pharaoh New capital built- in honor of Akhen Nefertiti- responsible for design and it being built Urban center long processional path center of political and religious authority Rulers physically separated from people Pharaoh and family- direct worship to Akhen The people- indirect worship through the pharaoh This worked during his lifetime, but immediately after his death the people reverted back to the preexisting belief system—beliefs deeply routed The way he tried to do it wasn’t successful-he didn’t pull from preexisting constructs and societies, practices, and customs -correct relationship with divine -effort to express and practices RIGHT gods
