Cureton Gannon Mrs. McCarroll December 7, 2010 Final paper Theme : Being vs. Seeming Thesis: Authors across time continue to draw upon the same idea of expressing truth over perception. They repeatedly express that being true to one’s self instead of seeming to be what others expect him or her to be is superior, however, when double consciousness is combined, the line of seeming and truth is blurred. Quote 1: “I would give up the unessential; I would give my money, I would give my life for my children; but I wouldn’t give myself” The Awakening by Kate Chopin Edna Pontellier expresses that she would rather be what she is than to seem like the traditional mother- woman. She claims that she would give up everything for her children, but refuses to loose her true self in that exchange. She feels that it is more important to be true to one’s self than to spend your time trying to fufill everyone else’s expectations, even social ones. Quote 2: “The old Indian ghosts ‘Quapaw’ ‘Waccamaw’ are just billboard words in this crummy town.” “Passing Through Little Rock” by Simon Ortiz Ortiz addresses the conflict in him, but also in the world he lives in. He brings to light that many corporations use the names of Native American tribes or words to sell their product or whatever they are selling, something that truly has no relation with Native American. Also he introduces his inter conflict of seeming to just be an “Indian” but in reality he is an American. Quote 3: “Let be be the finale of seem”
