What you MUST know in Ch 30: Reduced gametophyte advantage of seed plants * Angiosperm life cycle *covered in Ch 29, under terrestrial adaptations (reduced = smaller n gametophyte, dependent on sporophyte for development—see fig 30.1, p 562) Seed plants • Terrestrial adaptation = seeds (vs. spores) are the means of offspring dispersal • Pollen = sperm; seeds = zygote (or embryo + food) • 2 groups of seed plants: o Coniferophytes (conifers) Pine trees, firs, spruce, junipers, redwood, cedar Male and female reproductive structures are in male (pollen) cones and female (ovule) cones The trees are the sporophyte generation 1-3 years for fertilization and seed development Gymnosperms (include cycads, ginkgo, conifers) have seeds that are less protected from the environment than the seeds of angiosperms See fig 30.4, p 566 for conifer life cycle Angiosperms (= flowering plants)...
