NATS 1840 Lecture 12 – Utilities and Conservation Power can be produced in many different ways, coal, wind, nuclear, etc., but the utility industry has become dominated by centralized, large-scale power production technologies Electricity has characteristics determined by the laws of physics and the kinds of technologies that produce it: o Long term storage of electricity is inefficient (remember the battery and the car), so it has to be used once produced o Supply and demand of electricity have to be balanced or the grid can be damaged, this is cheaper in a monopoly than in an open market o AC power can be broadcast over long distances with minimum power loss, and AC has become the dominant power standard o Damage to one part of the infrastructure can have immediate ramifications elsewhere in the system, so system access must also be regulated and controlled o Electricity distribution requires the maintenance of certain system variables, like voltage and frequency, they are maintained by “ancillary services”, in a monopoly system they are provided, in a competitive system ‘they have to be bought and paid for, or they may not be provided.’
