NATS 1840 – Lecture 3 – Dutch Hydraulic Engineering Medieval Dutch Hydraulic Engineering - The Medieval Agricultural Revolution (6th – 14th century) - Europe had heavy rainfall, with thick, wet soil - Difficult to plough, iron–shod heavy wooden plough drawn by oxen adopted, expense led to farming collectives - Field rotation, one planted with crop, fallow with mixed vegetables planted to restore nitrogen to soil, use of manure - Adoption of the horse-collar, horses cheaper and more efficient than oxen, increased horse population - These technologies allowed Europe to increase food production and increase population (tripled), increase army sizes - Horses used for combat, adding deadly cavalry to armies - The introduction of the stirrup allowed for armored knights to do combat while on horseback, and they became the medieval equivalent of the “tank” - Centralized irrigation agriculture was unnecessary Hydraulic Engineering in Holland - As populations expanded, demand for food increased, arable land in Europe was scarce (comparatively small), and periodic crop failures put nations at risk of starvation, made them vulnerable to disease and
