Fall 2011 FDST 4050L/6050L Laboratory 1 Applications of Computer Spreadsheets in Data Analysis Computer spreadsheets can greatly simplify many kinds of data analysis and graphing. Properly designed graphs contribute to the professional appearance of reports. This lab will help students in solving selected problems in food processing using spreadsheets, preparing professional plots of scientific data, graphing equations, determination of slope, intercept, and linear regression. Formula Entry You will learn how to enter data and formula in a spreadsheet Excel Graphing data Some elements of professional plots of scientific data: 1. Use of a scatter plot to show the relationship between the dependent (y value) and independent (x value) variables, especially if the interval between x values is not consistent 2. Axes with suitable labels and units 3. Use of a white background if plot is black-and-white or if the plot is to be photocopied (but grey is fine for color slides) 4. A suitable line or curve
