Case study: Roy and Neuman’s Theory 491 Professor AnnMarie Vang May 5 th , 2019
Objectives Define Roy’s model theory. Apply to the case study. Influence of Roy’s model on the nurse’s action. Determine the importance of patient information versus medical records based on Roy’s model theory. Identify four stressors based on Neuman’s system model. Create a care plan based on Neuman’s system model for St. John.
Roy’s Adaptation Model: Concept Unique model: used in education, research and nursing practice. Individual = biophysical adaptive system Nursing = discipline emphasizing adaptive and coping mechanisms. Four global concepts of nursing Person = the adaptive system, Environment = the stimuli to the person, Health and illness = influenced by stimulus and ability of person to adapt. Nursing = promotes adaptation and health (Google, n.d.) (Ursavas, Karayurt, & Iseri, 2014) (Smith & Parker, 2010) (Nursing theory: Roy Adaptation Model, 2016)
Roy’s Adaptation Model: Person Person = bio-psycho-social being. In constant interaction with a changing environment. Coping mechanisms: innate and acquired: biological, psychological and social Health and illness inevitable. Positive response = adaptation Adaptation depends on stimulus and response level Person has 4 modes of adaptation: physiologic needs, self- concept, role function and inter- dependence. (De Almeida, et al., 2018) (Ursavas, Karayurt, & Iseri, 2014) (Smith & Parker, 2010) (Nursing theory: Roy Adaptation Model, 2016)
Roy’s Adaptation Model: Nursing role Goal of nursing = help the patient adapt to change. Meet basic physiological needs. Develop a positive self-concept. Perform social roles. Achieve balance between dependence and interdependence. Nurses use Holistic approach Promote adaptation for individuals contributing to health, quality of life, and dying with dignity. Assess patient behavior and factors that influence adaptive abilities (Ursavas, Karayurt, & Iseri, 2014) (Smith & Parker, 2010) (Nursing theory: Roy Adaptation Model, 2016)
Roy’s Adaptation Model: four modes Physiologic: activity of system of the body (oxygen, nutrition, elimination, activity and rest, fluids, neuro and endocrine systems…) Self-concept: beliefs and feelings of person
