3 1 - ADVANTAGES OF ARTS AND CULTURE IN EDUCATION Arts and culture in education plays an important role in the leaner developing his or her totality thus playing a role in the holistic educational approach that has been stated to be the most effective educational method. The inclusion of arts and culture in education plays an important role in equipping learners with various necessary skills as well as encouraging their independence and self-confidence. Advantages of Arts and Culture in education includes the development of critical thinking skills by encouraging learners to compare and review various viewpoints of peers and explore new ideas. This essential skill set will enable learners to find problems to solutions and formulate new ideas (Montgomerie & Furgeson, 1999; Stevenson & Deasy 2005). Studies have shown that art students achieve higher scores than their peers who do not study art, this can be due to their skills in critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities (Harris 2007; Kinney & Forsythe, 2005). Creative arts teaching can also facilitate cross-cultural understanding through improving tolerance and gaining respect for other cultures (Kang Song & Gammel, 2011; Stevenson & Deasy,2005). Arts teaching can aid in building collaboration skills through teaching learners to listen to each other’s ideas and by giving constructive criticism learners become active group members that work together to achieve a common goal (Heath & Roach 1999, Malin, 2012). Self-expression through art can enhance communication skills. This is due to how art teaches learners to use media, movement, symbols, visuals and sounds to communicate and express themselves. Arts and Culture education has proven to be beneficial to learners, developing more than just their creative side but also enhancing their cognitive ability. This proves that arts and culture education does not only hold a variety of advantages to learners but it is a crucial part of their holistic development. The recognition and inclusion of art in education is crucial and should be part of an educational curriculum in order to ensure that learners have the necessary exposure to artistic teaching in order to develop holistically and achieve their full potential.
