Henry VIII Henry VIII (Tudor) – renounced the teachings of Martin Luther in support of Roman Catholic teachings Catherine of Aragon – who he was originally married to Anne Boleyn – fell in love with her; largely for personal reasons wanted to marry her, but also for political reasons (wants a son) Church of England – for political reasons Henry VIII wants a divorce (wants a son); however, the pope won’t allow the divorce; o Remember: the pope is merely a figurehead for Charles IV (King of Spain) at this time; Charles IV is the nephew of Catherine of Aragon (of Spain); he will not let his aunt become some poor divorcee o In desperation, Henry VIII breaks away from the Catholic church and forms a new church of England in which he is the head; to this day, the monarch of England is still head of the Church of England (it is in the law the monarch must be a Protestant, etc.) o Anne Boleyn still couldn’t give Henry a son; was beheaded, not simply for this, but for political reasons as well
