The lakeis quite circular, and is fringed with a border of bright greensucculent plants; the almost precipitous walls of the crater areclothed with wood, so that the scene was altogether bothpicturesque and curious. Carlos,which is no less than ninety-three miles from the Corcovado. Thetransparency is, I presume, owing to the equable and high state ofatmospheric dryness. In barrier-reefs it has long been remarked with surprisethat the passages through the reef exactly face valleys in theincluded land, even in cases where the reef is separated from theland by a lagoon-channel so wide and so much deeper than the actualpassage itself, that it seems hardly possible that the very smallquantity of water or sediment brought down could injure the coralson the reef. In the course of this day we crossedsome of the worst passes in the Cordillera, but their danger hasbeen much exaggerated. The whole surface is covered byvarious kinds of stately trees, interspersed with patches ofcultivated ground, out of which houses, convents, and chapelsarise.
