Righteous vs Wicked The passage of scripture I have chosen to write my exegesis paper on is Psalms 1:1-6 which reads, “How happy is the one who does not walk in the advice of the wicked or stand in the pathway with sinners or sit in the company of mockers! 2 Instead, his delight is in the Lord’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted beside flowing streams that bears its fruit in its season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does pros- pers. 4 The wicked are not like this; instead, they are like chaff that the wind blows away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand up in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the right- eous. 6 For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to ruin. 1 Within this passage of scripture we will be talking about the life of a righteous per - son who is living for Christ and the life of an unrighteous person who is not living for Christ. We will be discussing the difference between someone who lives their life for Christ and what that looks like and someone who does not live their life for Christ and what that looks like. We will talk about some consequences that may come about. The book of Psalms was written between 1440 B.C. the time of Moses and 586 B.C. dur- ing the Babylonian captivity. This is a wide range of time before Christ. The purpose of the au- thors writing the book of Psalms was to provide poetry/songs that would express praise, worship, and confessions of sins and other things to God. One author says, “The word for psalms in He- brew is Tehilîm, which means ‘praise.’ The English title is derived from the Greek translation (LXX) Psalmoi, which means ‘songs of praise.’ Praise directed to Yahweh, the God of Israel, is 1 Christian Standard Version

certainly the primary emphasis in the psalms.” 2 “The book of Psalms consists of many different hymns and prayers composed by individuals but used by the community.” 3 The book of Psalms contains one hundred and fifty chapters. Many believe that the Jews broke the book of Psalms down into five different books of Moses. “The book of Psalms have a form and character pecu- liar to themselves; and with individual diversities of style and subject, they all assimilate to that form, and together constitute a consistent system of moral truth.” 4 Throughout the book of Psalms we are able to see the nature, attributes, perfections, works of creation, providence, grace, and love unfolded. The beauty of the book of Psalms is there is something in there for every per- son, in every walk of life. The book of Psalms has attracted attention from Christians than any other book within the Old Testament. The author of Psalms chapter 1 is unknown. Chapter one of Psalms is well known and sometimes referred to as the prologue or introduction to the rest of the Psalms. “ Psalms 1 was not placed at the opening of the Psalter by accident: indeed, this poem may have been composed to introduce the book.”
